By minazaki
I managed to snag one of these cases while they were in stock at the Speck website about 10 days ago. I've had it installed on my 15" rMBP for about a week now. Here are my initial thoughts:At first, the thought of covering up the rMBP's beautiful aluminum finish did not seem appealing to me. Then, my OCD got the best of me, and I started noticing tiny scuffs on the aluminum, and I thought it was time to buy a case. As opposed to buying a sleeve which only protected the laptop while in transit, I opted for the Speck, which provided full time protection. The case comes in two parts. The larger of the two snaps on to the bottom of the laptop, and has four soft rubber feet. The second and much thinner part snaps on to the lid. Both of these have a soft satiny feel, which is actually quite pleasant to the touch. It is translucent, which is also a nice touch, as the Apple logo on the back lid produces a nice glow through the case. On the inner surface of each portion of the case are tiny rubber spacers, which keep the inner surface of the case from making contact with the aluminum. This is a thoughtful feature, as one of my main concerns with this case was particles becoming entrapped between the case and the laptop, scratching the soft aluminum. The cutouts are as expected: starting with the front, there's a nice cutout for the lid opening; on the left side, a nice roomy cutout for the I/O ports and MagSafe 2 connector (won't get in the way of even larger cables, accessories, etc); along the back edge is a nice cutout for the vents; finally, on the right, another roomy cutout for the remaining I/O ports and the SD slot.Installation was a "snap" (pun intended). There are several tiny tabs along the edges which hold the case in place. It's a very precise fit. I have noticed that there is a little bit of give on the lower half of the case, owing to the rubber feet, but it's not at all annoying. When it's all put together, it certainly does add a little bit of thickness and a tiny amount of weight to the rMBP, but it's not outrageous. Aesthetically, it looks and feels great. Functionally, I no longer have to worry about scratching up my laptop as I take it in and out of my bag, which is nice.My main concerns:1. Heat. I have noticed since installing it that the fans come on more frequently, and the laptop is certainly a little warmer to the touch. Just a guess here, but it seems that the pocket of dead space between the computer and the case is trapping air. Hot air. Very hot air. Despite there being cut-outs for the vents/fans, I think this design element is trapping heat.2. Dust scratching the aluminum. Since the case has only been on for 1 week, I haven't felt it necessary to remove it and clean the inside of the case/reinspect the laptop. I'll probably check in a week or so and see how it looks. Hoping for the best. I'll update this review after I spend some more time with the case. (See below).Overall:Great case. Hopefully will keep the aluminum looking like new, and look pretty stylish at the same time. My main concerns are above. Those, and the fact that I think $50 is a bit on the pricey side, are enough for me to knock one star off. Still, highly recommended.EDIT 10/21/2012:As promised, I am updating this review now that the case has been on for some time. I removed the case to look for damage to the laptop, and there is none. Also, there was only a very small amount of trapped dirt between the case and the laptop. There was no damage to the laptop from the retention tabs on the case.Overall, my opinion of this case has not changed: very good case with one star marked off because of increased heat with case on, and $50 being a bit on the pricey side.

pros:The Case is good, it has a solid good look and is grippy then having it without any case.It has a good soft material, yet protective (When I say protective, I do not know how protective because I have not done a hit/throw-down test, and I am not going to).---------------------------------------------------------------------------A little paragraph to neutralize this case (topic, not a case, like MacBook case or something):I have tried other MacBook Pro retina cases, and they are not even close to this good quality.I have tried Hardcandy, Kuzy , mCover and of course speck which I am reviewing now. The Kuzy tights up on the computer , and if you take it off it might brake the ventilation ports, the Hardcandy cases colour fades after a month, and mCover has two stand clasps on the bottom which breaks pretty easily, otherwise it still protects your computer but it is still not better.........................................................................................................................................Cons:The case corners breaks even if you do not touch them and you follow the instructions to put it on and take it off. Eventually you would have to take it off, because you have to clean the computer. When the case gets warm from the computer heat, the softens and the satin look just fades away. For people who bought their MacBook retinas for the lightweight, has to know that this case will make your computer heavier.----------------------------------------------------------------------How I am voting this product:Quality- because of the touch and looks are fading away, I am giving it a 3out of 5Price- it still protects your device from scratches and it does not break your computer, therefore I am giving it a 4 out of 5.Value- because the corners easily break, yet it is good enough, I am giving it a 2 out of 5Note: once the corner breaks, the bottom part just falls off so basically your bottom laptop part is not protected.A review I made and published on [...]

I also snagged one 10 days ago. My review is the same as above. No give on the bottom part like this reviewer but my top cover shows a sliver of aluminum around the top corners. Not really noticeable unless you're OCPD like me and this reviewer. Probably due to the extremely tight fit, but removing the top cover is a struggle, to the point where I feel like I might damage the rmbp screen. It's on there pretty good. I have taken the cover off multiple times, the "snaps" don't seem to be scratching or doing damage to the aluminum. This is not a time tested theory though. But you are undoubtedly protecting the bulk of the case. This is a $30, maybe $40 cover at best, so 4 stars for price. Otherwise, it is the best case on the market now, with the best laptop ever made. Just getting greedy at this point.
